Our Story
Granville Island Spice Co. was founded as South China Seas Trading Co. ("SCS") in 1987 in Vancouver by Alberta-born graphic designer and food enthusiast Don Dickson, inspired by a transformative trip through Asia.
The company takes its name from the South China Sea, the world's largest marginal sea. Surrounded by China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam, it has been the crossroads of cultures, contested borders, and thriving trade routes for over 17 million years.
By 2016, more than $3.4 trillion in trade - around 21% of global commerce - flowed through the South China Sea, underscoring its enduring importance in world trade.
SCS is rooted in the world's oldest trade that has shaped the world - the spice trade. We believe in the unique power of food to connect cultures and communities. Guided by the principle of "one world, one people," our mission is simple yet profound - to bring the most authentic, highest-quality spices and ingredients from every corner of the world into every kitchen, rekindling connection in an increasingly divided world.
At SCS, our values are woven into everything we do - how we work as a team, how we serve our customers, how we craft our products, and how we nurture relationships with our partners.
S - Smart, Strong, Supportive
